What’s the Current Price of Bread in Your Country?

The price of bread is subsidized here in Morocco (where about 56% of cereals are imported in 2008, according to The Economist), but even so, the price has been going up.

A loaf of white bread currently costs 1.40 dirhams (19 U.S. cents) in Morocco, while a loaf of whole-wheat bread costs 2.02 dirhams (27 U.S. cents). But the loaves are much smaller than American loaves. My guess is for an American-sized white Wonder bread loaf (three times the size), it would be as if the price in Morocco were 57 U.S. cents, or a quarter of the free-market price.

I’ve been wondering how these prices compared to other countries. Searching on the internet, I found these comments regarding prices in mid-June, 2008:

U.S.A.:

American Flag

About $2.30 average for a loaf of standard, supermarket sliced bread

About $4.00 ($3.50 – $4.50) a loaf for whole-wheat or oat breads

Canada:

Canadian Flag

$1.75 (1.73 U.S.) for supermarket loaf

United Kingdom:

British Flag

£1.20 British Pounds ($2.37 U.S.), for standard supermarket loaf

Australia:

Australian Flag

$2.00 ($1.90 U.S.) for the supermarket brand

$2.50 – $4.00 ($2.37 – $3.84 U.S.) for other brands

$4.50 ($4.32 U.S.) for specialty brands

I’d be very interested in hearing about the prices of bread in places like India, China, South Africa, Russia, Kenya, Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, France, Italy, and Japan! Can any readers enlighten us?

My suggestion is if you live in a region where it is possible to keep bread tightly wrapped, in the refrigerator, it will stay fresh longer. Also bread freezes quite well until you are ready to use it.

Don’t forget there are many uses for stale bread (just meaning less supermarket fresh). Delicious homemade croutons are easy to make, and can be made from whole-wheat, as well as white breads. They can be used in soups and salads, and even just for a quick snack.

My next post will explain how to make them!

  1. A pack of bread which has around 19-20 slices costs around 19 Indian rupees. That must be around 44 cents. Sliced bread is more popular than a loaf in India.

In France, in my Wrinkle-in-the-Outskirts of Paris, a pain de campagne, just a basic country bread, is somewhere between one euro thirty-five and one euro sixty-five centimes. You can get half a baguette for 35 or 40 centimes, depending on where you are. Banette, made from a special flour, is more.

Is the price of bread in India subsidized by the government?

  5. The price of bread is not subsidised in India, Mme. Monet. The prices of rice, wheat and some other essential cereals and pulses are subsidised and the subsidies vary from state to state. However, the governments (central and states) subsidise ONLY the food that is sold through the Public Distribution System (PDS) for those who live below the poverty line. Everything else is determined by the markets, including the price of bread.

In Kazahstan (Central Asia) a loaf of standart bread(0.5 kg) cost 0.34$ , and in same region of Russia – 0.5$

  7. SpaceDoll Says:

Bread does not stay fresher in the refrigerator, as this is the optimum temperature for “going stale”. Room temperature or frozen will lead to the longest shelf life.

  12. Ender Says:

A typical mass of commonly sold russian bread is 600…800 grams for white bread and 700…900 grams for rye bread. A typical price for them is 16…18 roubles. Given the current exchange rate between RUR and USD the price of russian bread is USD $0.53…0.6

In Croatia it’s climbed to 1.50$ – 2$ (700grams) in recent years and it’s quality is very poor considering the fact that Croatia produces a lot of wheat and even exports it. Pre-sliced bread is almost unknown in the ex-Yugoslavian countries.

As for me, I was tired of lousy bread at the local shop so I learned to make my own. I make it with home-made Croatian olive oil and it goes wonderfully with fish and a bottle of red wine :)
